Elijah William Bacon

Elijah William Bacon was born about 1838 in Burlington, CT to parents Roswell Bacon Jr and Betsy Smith with brothers Oliver, Andrew and Almeron and sister Maria.   By 1850 the family had moved to Berlin.  Elijah married Eliza Angeline Shelley in 1857 and they had 2 daughters.  On July 28, 1862 Elijah and his brother Andrew enlisted in the 14th Regiment, Company F.  Elijah was a private.  He was promoted on February 20, 1864 to corporal.  He earned the Congressional Medal of Honor during the Battle of Gettysburg during Pickett's Charge for his valor in capturing the flag of the Sixteenth North Carolina Regiment on July 3, 1863.  He was killed on May 6, 1864 in the Wildnerness, VA. and buried in Maple Cemetery, Berlin.  He is the only person listed on both Soldier’s Monuments in town.
