Walter E Smith

Walter E. Smith, age 17, lived in 1860 in Berlin with his parents Noah and Harriet and siblings Harriet and Charles.  He enlisted into the 16th Regiment, Company G on July 30, 1862.  he was wounded on September 17, 1862 in Antietam, MD.  He was captured on April 20, 1864 in Plymouth, NC.  He was a prisoner of war in Andersonviulle. 

 

He was mentioned in Charlie’s Civil War by Charles Brandegee Livingstone, page 76, 142, 188, 189, and 218:  “Private Walter E Smith (1842-1932) Co G 16. Captured at Plymouth, NC in April 1864, he was nursed back to health following his exchange by Charlie’s father, Dr Elishama Brandegee.  Walter Smith seems to have bad luck all around.  Walter E Smith was a machinist from Berlin, Conn had been wounded in the mouth at Antietam, and his left leg was severely injured when he was run over by an ambulance while enroute to the hospital at Frederick, MD.  The wound in Smith’s leg was still open when he was captured at Plymouth, NC  He survived his imprisonment at Andersonville, but suffered from his injuries for years thereafter.  In August 1883, Dr Elishama Brandegee referred to Smith as a broken down old soldier.” 

 

He was paroled on December 10, 1864.  He was discharged on May 27, 1865.  He died on September 13, 1832 at age 89 years in Newington, CT.  He was buried in the Wilcox Cemetery in East Berlin.
