Lafayette Gladding was born in 1830 in Newington. He was educated at the Bell School house in the southern part of Newington. In 1849 he took a trip to California by sailing around Cape Horn. He lived for 2 years in California. He enlisted from Wethersfield into the 22nd Regiment, Company B as a wagoner on August 30, 1862. He mustered out on July 7, 1863 in Hartford. After the war he lived in Portland and by 1870, he lived in Berlin where he married Belle Buckley. About 1897 he moved back to Newington where he was involved in public affairs. He was known to be genial and happy. He received his Civil War pension. He died on January 4, 1906 at age 75 (Hartford Courant, January 5, 1906). He was buried in Maple Cemetery in Berlin.
