James L. Smith, age 23, lived in New Britain as a silver plater. He enlisted into the 29th Colored Regiment, Company B as a Sergeant. He was wounded on October 27, 1864 at Kell House, VA. and died from his wounds on November 5, 1864. He was buried at Petersburg National Cemetery in Virginia. His name is on the Afro-American war memorial Plaque E-148.
