James L. Francis was born in Vermont.  In 1860, he was age 20 and lived with his parents Daniel, age 60, and Elizabeth, age 60, and sister Amelia, age 21.  He enlisted into 1st Heavy Artillery, Company G as a private in May 22, 1861.  He transferred October 23, 1861 to 12th Regiment, Company C.  He transferred to Company B.  He was promoted Sergeant on June 26, 1862.  He transferred to Company K.  He was captured on October 27, 1862 in Georgia Landing, LA.  He was pardoned on December 3, 1962.  He was wounded and captured March 28, 1863 on the gunboat Diana.  He was recaptured April 15, 1863.  He was mentioned in Charlie’s Civil War by Charles Brandegee Livingstone, page 113, 114:  “Lt. James L Francis (1839-1864) Co K 12 was captured at Labradorville, LA on October 27, 1862.  He was exchanged, and was mortally wounded during the campaign for Vicksburg on Nov 21, 1863.”   He died on Nov. 21, 1863 from wounds from the battle for Vicksburg.   His brother Daniel served in 7th Regiment, Company A from Hartford, survived the war, became a store clerk in Hartford, married Lizzie and died on Dec. 11, 1914 in Hartford.
