Henry Richards, age 50, in 1860, lived in Berlin as a butcher with his wife Caroline, age 29, and children: Rebecca 14, Hannah 12, Henry 10, Caroline 6, Edwin 4, Antiam 2, and Adeline seven months. He enlisted into the 1st Heavy Artillery, Company H on May 22, 1861. He reenlisted ion December 30, 1863. He mustered out on August 8, 1865. He was mentioned in Charlie’s Civil War by Charles Brandegee Livingstone, page 50, 56, 57: “Private Henry Richards (1817-1865) Co H 1st HA was a butcher from Berlin. He would eventually desert from the army, go insane, and on September 12, 1865 committed suicide by slashing his throat with a razor.” He died on September 129, 1865 at age 55 and was buried in Bridge Cemetery on Farmington Avenue in Berlin.
