Charles Brandegee, age 15, lived in Berlin in 1860 with his parents Dr. Elishama and Florence, and siblings: Townsend, age 17, Florence, age 13, Robert, age 11, Emily, age 9, Henry, age 5, Kate, age 7, Edith, age 3, and Horace, baby. He enlisted at age 17 into the NY 5th Regiment, Company I on November 1, 1862. He transferred to the NY 146th Regiment, Company A, a Duryee Zouaves, on May 4, 1863. He was captured at the Battle of the Wilderness in 1864. His brother Townsend also served in the war. He mustered out on June 11, 1865. After the war, he moved out west, married, moved to Farmington, CT as town clerk and probate judge. His Civil War pension was collected by his wife Mabel. He died on September 21, 1927 at age 82 in Somerville, MA. He was buried in Maple Cemetery, Berlin, CT.
