Abel Steele was born in Berlin about 1840.  He enlisted into the 12th Regiment, Company I on January 24, 1862.  He received a disability discharge on April 5, 1862.  By 1870, he was a resident in Wethersfield with his wife Frances, age 28, and a daughter May age 14.  He received his Civil War pension.  According to the Hartford Courant (11-14-1910), he died on November 12, 1910 at age 80 while attending a wedding anniversary,  he fell down a flight of stairs and sustained fatal injuries.   He was buried in Wethersfield.
